Nothing beats homemade marinara sauce! It is very simple to make and only requires five basic pantry ingredients: olive oil, good canned tomatoes, garlic, vinegar, and herbs.
This sauce offers authentic Italian flavor and takes about 30 minutes to simmer. And unlike store-bought sauces, this is free from added sugar and can be stored in the freezer.
It also makes an incredible pizza sauce! In fact, this is the marinara sauce we use to top of our pizza dough because it tastes just like real Italian pizza. Once you make this yourself, you won't want to use the store-bought kind again!
MARINARA SAUCE
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon olive oil
3-4 garlic cloves, minced
28 ounce can crushed tomatoes
14 ounce diced tomatoes
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon vinegar
2 tablespoons fresh basil, finely chopped
Salt and fresh pepper, to taste
Instructions:
1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add oil until hot; stir in garlic, saute until golden, being careful not to burn.
2. Add the tomatoes, bay leaf, oregano and vinegar; season with salt and pepper. Simmer for 30 minutes on low heat. Turn off heat, mix in fresh chopped basil.
